On Friday, 29th September 2017, the Widening Participation Unit hosted a celebration event in the Great Hall for the most recent graduates of the Junior Academy and Junior Academy Sports Programmes. Representatives from eleven schools across Northern Ireland were present. This was an exciting event as this is the first cohort of pupils to have had the opportunity to follow each of the programmes from beginning to end.
Maria Lee (Head of Educational and Skills Development) presented the Junior Academy participants with their certificates of participation. Junior Academy schools present included:
|Ashfield Girls’ School||Glengormley High School|
|Belfast Boys’ Model School||St. Joseph’s College|
|Belfast Model School for Girls’||St. Louise’s Comprehensive College|
|Corpus Christi College||St. Rose’s Dominican College|
Martin Clarke (GAA All Star, Professional Australian Football League player, commentator on BBC1’s The Championship) kindly presented the Junior Academy Sports Leadership awards to the boys who participated in the programme. The schools included: Bangor Academy & Sixth Form College, Hazelwood Integrated College and Kilkeel High School.
Finally, Ruairi Taylor (Queen’s Sport) presented eight of these pupils with a Spirit of Leadership award in recognition of their achievements throughout the Junior Academy Sports Programme.
The Widening Participation team hope that all involved found the programme beneficial and enjoyed participating. We wish all of our pupils the best in their future endeavours and hope to see them getting involved with our Senior Academy and Pathway Opportunity Programme in the upcoming year.
