+ Project Description
Increasing numbers of road users, congestion, rising fuel and road tax costs have led to the development of a new generation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Among the key benefits which have been realised already are improved road safety, traffic management and fairer pricing for road usage. This has been achieved in part by vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) communications using dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) which operate at 5.8 GHz.
With recent advances in the manufacture of millimetre-wave (mm-wave) chipsets at 60 GHz, driven in part by the development of new technologies such as WiGig, an opportunity now exists for even greater information exchange in ITS.
Central to the design of robust hardware and protocols optimised for mm-wave ITS will be an understanding of the wireless channel characteristics for these systems. Using both field measurements and simulation, this PhD study will investigate the wireless channel for ITS under realistic operating conditions ranging from dense urban and city centre environments through to more spatial, higher velocity highway/motorway scenarios. It is anticipated that the outcomes of the project will make strong contributions to physical layer communications for ITS and beyond.
• To investigate emerging technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems.
• Perform measurements to characterise various aspects of the mm-wave V2V and V2R channels.
• To determine the impact of mobility and varying traffic densities on these emerging communications channels.
• Develop new channel models for mm-wave ITS.
• To disseminate research findings at top national and international conferences, and publish in leading IEEE journals.
