Launched in 2007, Belfast Mela, was created to celebrate our diversity and provide a shared, inclusive space for all communities to express their own cultural identity.

Mela is now one of Northern Ireland’s largest arts festivals bringing together music, dance, arts and food from across the world to celebrate our city’s proud cultural diversity.

The 16th annual Belfast Mela will take place 20 – 28 August 2022 with a week-long programme of events across the city.

Here are some of the ways in which you can get involved:

Mela Carnival
Saturday 20th August 2022 12pm – 5pm

The newly created 800+ carnival parade will make its way from Writers Square, culminating in a global Pop-up village at City Hall.

The participatory parade will be co-designed with citizens to showcase the rich diversity and creativity of the city and will include large scale floats and sculptural pieces, performance bands, dance groups and community showcases.

Within the colour section of the carnival procession, there will be a float representing the Hindu Festival of HOLI also known as the Festival of Colours.

Volunteer as a Colour Thrower

Mela need volunteer colour throwers to join the fun and throw rainbow-coloured powders. Grab some colleagues or fellow students and get involved!

Volunteers can also join in the fun of the procession, wearing a QUB Mela 2022 t-shirt (free for every volunteer) and demonstrate your commitment to diversity and inclusion by getting into the community spirit.

To sign up as a volunteer colour thrower (and to receive your QUB Mela 2022 t-shirt contact): Heather Callighan
