This event will draw on the research, representation and advocacy work being done on behalf of mothers who violently lost children during the Northern Ireland conflict. Bringing together the leading Northern Ireland NGO Relatives for Justice addressing the human rights of bereaved mothers, and Professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin Former UN Special Rapporteur for Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights and Elected Member, International Commission of Jurists./QUB Law School - whose work explores the gendered aspects of conflict with a particular focus on maternal harm - the session will focus on what we know about maternal harm and what obligations both state and non-state actors hold to redress the harms experienced by women as mothers during the conflict. Drawing on a recent public exhibition which brought the images of mothers in public space for the first time collectively, the event also addresses legal and non-legal acknowledgment, remedy and repair for loss and maternal harm.
