Chemical Engineering Practice

Overview

1. Labs (20 Hours):
Labs: Students will be divided into groups. Each group will carry out experiments based on:
• Batch Reactor (2 hours).
• Heat Pump Unit (2 hours).
• Boiling Heat (2 hours).
• Turbulent Flow Heat Exchanger (2 hours).
• Liquid/Liquid Extraction (2 hours).
• Distillation Column (2 hours).
• Gas Adsorption (2 hours).
• Process Control (2 hours).
• Fluidised Bed (2 hours).
• Flow of Solids in a Hopper (2 hours).
An individual pre-lab report is submitted for each experiment
An individual lab performance mark is given for all experiments, 2 of which are a Practical Skills Assessment.
There are four post-lab multiple choice quizzes; each covering two experiments.
There is one poster design post-lab.
There is one full report post-lab.

2. Computer Lab Classes and assessment (20 hours):
Students are provided with online tutorials. Students will also have the opportunity to be offered summary computer lab class in each of the core areas.
• Aspen
• AutoCAD (self-learning)
• Excel
• Matlab
Class tests on Aspen and Matlab

Learning Objectives

On completion of this module students should have:
• Demonstrated competence, including safety awareness, in the operation of large-scale engineering rigs and laboratory equipment and communicated associated results and interpretations.
• Designed and implemented computer-based approaches to investigate, model, and analyze complex chemical engineering systems and data.

Skills

Students are expected to demonstrate the following on completion of the module:
• Skills in calculation, experimentation, data analysis, and error evaluation.
• Communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to write reports.
• Reflection on development as a chemical engineer through post-lab report.
• Ability to use a suite of software to aid chemical engineering calculations and design
