Level 3:
Building on skills acquired from a period of immersion in the target language and culture, this module aims to develop high-level proficiency in the target language. Tasks will promote linguistic, sociolinguistic and cultural awareness at an advanced level. The module consists of intersecting elements designed to provide a comprehensive consolidation of language competence: written language and a language enrichment/contextual studies class that focuses on linguistic and socio-cultural knowledge important to work-related situations in the target culture. For students of Irish, this module is taught through the Irish medium. French, Spanish, and Portuguese students receive one hour of spoken language class, led by a native speaker.
This module aims to equip students to learn and develop the necessary proficiency in grammatical, written, and spoken language skills. It will also equip them with professional and employability skills complementary to their studies. Written language seminars introduce students to language in context. Students are exposed to new vocabulary, expressions and nuances of use through reading, translation and writing exercises based on a variety of sources. Spoken language class develops students’ listening and speaking skills in the language.
On successful completion of the module, students should have developed the following range of skills: dexterity using grammar; translation skills; text analysis; comprehension; essay writing; lexicographical skills; IT skills; presentation skills; spoken language skills.
