Single Composition 3

Overview

Single Composition 3 is an optional year-long module in which students will study composition from the perspective of notated contemporary Western classical music. We will focus on the following areas: the history and practice of contemporary music; instrumentation; notation; formal compositional methods. As formal training towards professional activity as a composer, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the duty of each composer to be actively engaged as a listener; the module includes the requirement to document what your (classical) music influences are and how you have responded to these. The module provides the opportunity to write for professional musicians and your music will be workshopped in the class.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, demonstration, workshops and tutorials. The module will require the composition of five minutes of notated music.

Learning Objectives

The module allows a student to apply the more regulated study of Composition 1 and 2 in planning original compositions, developing a personal style and working according to a clearly defined time-schedule in producing a portfolio.

Skills

The student has responsibility for planning and executing original works - a test of imagination, technical skill and organization of time.
