Double Composition 3 is an optional year-long module in which students will study composition from the perspective of notated contemporary Western classical music. We will focus on the following areas: the history and practice of contemporary music; instrumentation; notation; formal compositional methods. As formal training towards professional activity as a composer, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the duty of each composer to be actively engaged as a listener; the module includes the requirement to document what your (contemporary classical) music influences are and how you have responded to these. Students in Composition 3 Double will also be expected to be able to relate their work to wider developments in culture and ideas. The module provides the opportunity to write for professional musicians and your music will be workshopped in the class.
Teaching is delivered through lectures, demonstration, workshops and tutorials. The module will require the composition of ten minutes of notated music.
The module gives a deeper insight into compositional activity, both through study of existing work and in the application of technique learned. There is also some opportunity for practical experimentation through workshops.
The student acquires intellectual confidence through the decision-making involved in original composition, and applied skills through meeting the demanding standards of presentation required in practical contexts.
