How to Apply-Queen's University Belfast 

If you would like to apply for US Federal Loans then you must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must do this online at When completing your FAFSA, you must list Queen's University Belfast as your school.  Our school code is G22736. Federal and State deadlines for completing the FAFSA can be found here.

  • Once you have submitted your FAFSA, an Institutional Student Information Report (ISIR) will be sent to us automatically by the US Department of Education. This report is used to determine your loan eligibility. It may take a week for the ISIR to be received by Queen's and we recommend that you email us at to confirm that you have submitted your FAFSA.
  • As soon as we have received your ISIR, International Student Support (ISS) will send you an internal loan application which includes a cost of attendance. You will be asked to confirm your programme information, any scholarships received and to complete a number of loan documents required for each loan.
  • When you have completed the internal application your loans will be originated and you will receive an award letter.

Direct Loan

Documents required

Direct Subsidised Loans and or Direct Unsubsidised Loans:

  • Master Promissory Note (MPN) for Subsidised/Unsubsidised Loans
  • Entrance Counselling for Subsidised/Unsubsidised Loans

Grad/Parent PLUS Loan:

  • PLUS MPN for Graduate/Professional Students or PLUS MPN for Parents
  • Direct PLUS Loan Application for Graduate/Professional Students or for Parents. The PLUS loan application includes a credit check (credit checks expire after 180 days)
  • Entrance Counselling for Direct PLUS Loans

Grad PLUS Loan Endorsers:

  • Endorser Addendum (completed by the endorser)
  • PLUS Credit Counseling is required if the U.S. Department of Education has informed you that you have an adverse credit history and you have: Obtained an endorser or documented extenuating circumstances to the satisfaction of the U.S. Department of Education

How much do I need to Borrow?

 It’s important to remember that you have to pay back your loans so only borrow what you need. You do not have to borrow the full cost of attendance.

When can I apply?

  • Students can apply as soon as the FAFSA is open for new applications however we do not view applications until April. Please also note that loans will not be originated until the US Department of Education has confirmed the origination fees and interest rates which normally happens in June. 
  • Loans can only be originated for new students when you have accepted an unconditional offer for your programme at Queen’s.  

Can I cancel/amend my loan? 

If you wish to cancel or reduce a loan at any stage of the academic year a minimum notice of 10 business days is required prior to the next disbursement. Please email clearly affirming if you wish to cancel the entire loan or a disbursement. To reduce your loan, you must clearly state the US Dollar amount you wish to borrow. 

WARNING - if we do not receive the minimum notice of 10 business days, then your disbursement will be released and you will be responsible for its repayment and any interest charges.
