Graduation | 10 December, 2018
Irish Superbike Pro Champion 2017, Charles Stuart, is graduating from Queen’s University Belfast today (Friday 14 December) with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
Charles, aged 28 from Ballycastle, has been a student at Queen’s for nine years, completing his undergraduate, Master’s and PhD studies at the University.
He graduated from Queen’s MEng Mechanical Engineering degree programme in 2013 with a First Class Honours degree. Charles receivied awards for highest academic performance for each of the four years of study, as well as the Sir Bernard Crossland, Mark Sweeney, Harry Ferguson and McCormick prizes in Stages three and four.
During his PhD study, Charles was also the recipient of a number of awards, including Queen’s Dunville Studentship, the prestigious American Society of Mechanical Engineering's 2018 Young Engineer Travel Award, and ABB's worldwide white paper competition commemorating 110 years of turbocharging.
As well as his academic achievements, Charles has also maintained a successful motorcycling career. He has been Irish champion seven times, spread across three motorcycling disciplines - motocross, enduro and superbikes. He has also represented Ireland twice at an international level.
Speaking about his time at Queen’s, Charles said: “I thoroughly enjoyed both my undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Queen's. The support I received allowed me to achieve both academically and in my motorcycling career. Aside from the day to day help and support of the inspirational staff in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, I gratefully received direct financial support from Queen's during my PhD as a recipient of a Dunville Studentship and Emily Sarah Montgomery Travel Award.
“I am incredibly proud to have gained a PhD from an institution with the international prestige of Queen’s. Graduation, of course, represents the culmination of a period of intense hard work. While gratifying in itself, this is further enhanced by the fact I will be joining the illustrious list of Queen's alumni.”
Following his graduation, Charles hopes to remain at Queen's as a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, with the ultimate goal of securing a lecturing post in the future.
