Leading Voice for Equality Presented with Honorary Degree by Queen’s University
Professor Dame Janet Beer, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool and current President of Universities UK, will today receive an honorary degree from Queen’s University Belfast.

Dame Janet is a powerful and passionate advocate for gender equality and was awarded a Damehood for services to higher education and equality and diversity in the 2018 New Year’s Honours list.
She was previously Vice-Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University and Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Humanities, Law and Social Sciences at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Dame Janet said: “I am very pleased to be recognised by Queen’s University Belfast in this manner. I have much admiration for this institution and applaud its commitment to gender equality and diversity. It is wonderful to see Queen’s University Belfast push forward with addressing this important issue. Their current success is reflected in its Athena SWAN Awards and I am encouraged to see them continue to actively cultivate a culture of equality.”
Queen’s University has been a member of the Athena SWAN Charter since its formation in 2005. The University currently holds one of only 13 Silver Institutional Awards in the UK as well as 15 Departmental Awards.
