    Short

Among the world’s top universities, Queen’s University Belfast is the ninth oldest university in the UK and considered one of the most beautiful.  Its location in Northern Ireland in the UK offers a unique blend of both British and Irish cultures, a broad choice of courses to study and the foundation of a memorable study abroad experience.

    Detailed

Founded in 1845 Queen’s University Belfast is the ninth oldest university in the UK. Queen’s is a proud member of the UK’s elite Russell Group of research intensive universities. This marks Queen’s as one of the most exceptional teaching universities in the country, alongside heavyweights such as Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College London.

The quality of teaching is recognised as being of the highest standard and our students are taught by academics passionate about the latest discoveries in their fields. Informed by exceptional teaching, all of our programmes come with a promise to produce world-class students.

In January 2020 Hillary Rodham Clinton became the Chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast. With her long-standing commitment to peace, stability and economic regeneration, she is a strong advocate for Northern Ireland and an inspirational role model for the Queen’s community.

  • Belfast and Northern Ireland

Belfast is a modern capital city, welcoming, easy to get around and an affordable place in which to live and study. It’s also within the safest region in the UK (UK Crime Surveys 2021/22). The city is best explored on foot or by bike, and our central campus means that most places are within a short walking distance with student travel discounts widely available for public transport.

    Belfast has it all:

    • A world class arts and culture scene ranging from intimate galleries to international artists
    • The cobblestoned streets of the Cathedral Quarter home to pubs and live music
    • A city centre with worldwide brands, independent boutiques and artisan markets
    • Local and international markets, shops and restaurants throughout the city and campus, so you’ll never get bored of the cuisine

In Northern Ireland you’re never far from spectacular scenery. Mountains, forests and stunning coastlines make up the rich landscape of the region, and activities like mountain biking, surfing and golf are popular. Belfast and the nearby Causeway Coast were named No.1 region in the world to visit in 2018 by the Lonely Planet. It’s easy to see why the Northern Ireland was chosen as the one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones!

    • Belfast has the lowest cost of living in the UK (Mercer Cost of Living City Ranking 2023).
    • Belfast was voted one of the top 15 friendliest cities in Europe (Condé Nast Traveller, Readers' Choice Awards 2021).
    • Northern Ireland is the happiest place to live in the UK (Lloyds Bank Happiness Index, 2020).
    • Belfast is in the safest region in the UK (UK Crime Surveys 2021/22).
    • “Belfast's nightlife is often loud, sometimes intoxicating and always fun. From traditional pubs to sleek cocktail bars to crowded clubs, the scene is generally friendly and accessible.” (Lonely Planet 2022).

  • Accommodation

Our incoming students are able to live in any of our on campus sites, though most Study Abroad students opt to stay in either Elms BT1 and BT2 or Elms BT9.

Elms BT1 & BT2 are located close to the city centre while Elms BT9, our purpose built student village, is found to the south of the city. Both sites are around a 15 minute walk to the campus, have laundry facilities, shared social spaces and 24 hour security.

Find out what our students have to say about accommodation at Queen’s and if you would like to know more about a specific site you can take a video tour of BT1, BT2 and BT9.
