Overview

Delivering Doctoral Training in the Social Sciences

The Northern Ireland and North East Doctoral Training Partnership (“NINE DTP”) is a new and exciting collaborative enterprise between seven Universities across Northern Ireland and the North East of England. Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, with support from the Department for the Economy Northern Ireland (DfENI), we provide outstanding students with fantastic opportunities to conduct their Doctoral studies and develop core research skills in an exciting and creative environment.

Each year, we award in excess of 50 studentships to exceptional social scientists across our seven partner Universities, providing funding to support Doctoral studies on three year (PhD), three-and-a-half year (PhD with Research Methods) or four year (Masters and PhD) programmes. We are committed to working with our award-holders, partners and collaborators to deliver an innovative and engaging experience, allowing our students to deliver real-world impact whilst developing into the next generation of social scientists.

Terms and Conditions

Eligibility

To be eligible for funding, you will need to meet the official ESRC requirements, as specified in their Postgraduate Funding Guidelines.
Please note: eligibility for funding does not guarantee you eligibility for a place at the University of your choice, which will have separate eligibility requirements.

Academic Qualifications and Experience

Applicants applying for a studentship must hold or be predicted a First or a good Upper Second Class undergraduate degree in the social sciences, or have relevant comparable experience.

Masters degree is not a prerequisite for studying with the NINE DTP. Applicants without relevant training to Masters level can apply for Master plus PhD (a 1+3 award) funding.

If you are applying for PhD funding (a +3 award) you must hold or be completing a Masters degree in the social sciences, which includes at least 60 credits of research methods training. Applicants with Masters degrees that do not include research methods training can be offered funding for 3.5 years to enable them to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods.

Commencement of Awards

To be eligible for a studentship in this current recruitment round you must be applying to commence a programme of postgraduate study which starts from October 2022. Awards cannot be deferred and selected candidates will be assumed to be starting their studies in October 2022 unless there are exceptional circumstances. This is for FULL TIME students only.  Queen's do not offer the award on a part time basis.

Eligibility

The NINE competition is now open to all applicants, both home and international.

Further details about the ESRC’s residency requirements can be found in the ESRC Postgraduate Funding Guidelines.

How to Apply

All candidates for ESRC funding should apply directly to the University of their choosing, in accordance with the rules and regulations of that institution.

Candidates should familiarise themselves with institutional practice, guidelines and deadlines to ensure that their application to the University is registered in a timely and effective manner. Please note that eligibility for ESRC funding does not guarantee that a candidate is eligible for a place in University; you should ensure you meet all requirements to take up a position within the institution in advance of submitting your application. We strongly advise that candidates identify and make contact with an academic at the earliest opportunity who is able to supervise the proposed research. Prospective supervisors are able to advise on eligibility, writing the research proposal and applying for funding.

To apply for an NINE ESRC studentship, you will need to submit the following documents, some of which are beyond the usual institutional requirements for applicants:

  1. The Institutional Postgraduate Application Form

This should include your research proposal, which must not exceed 2,000 words (including footnotes, but excluding bibliographies).

If a proposal exceeds this maximum length of 2,000 words it will not be considered.
  2. A Current CV
    Maximum: 2 pages
  3. Two References
Applications should be supported by two references. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure references are submitted at the time of the application.
  4. Transcripts
Applications should include the full transcripts of your previous qualifications obtained to date
  5. Consent form
NINE DTP requires your consent for us to process your data. A signed copy of the form should be submitted either with your university application, or directly to your supervisor.
  6. Equal Opportunities Monitioring FormNINE DTP asks that all students considering applying for NINE DTP funding should complete an equal opportunities monitoring form (downloadable via this webpage), and submit it separately to their intended department in advance of the deadline for applications. The information provided will not inform the outcomes of the competition, and will be proceesed separately.
