Maths and Statistics Helpdesk

The EPS Mathematics & Statistics Helpdesk (MASH) was introduced in 2019/20 and supports ALL UG & PG students across the University in their learning of Mathematics & Statistics. This initiative is delivered by the Maths Academy.

It brings these subjects, and skilled, friendly tutors, outside of the classroom together in a space where students can get free, confidential 1-to-1 support during term time.

If you want to further enhance your already fine-tuned mathematical ability or are just confused by a particular topic, stuck on a problem, want to build confidence in your mathematical ability, or want to consult about experimental design or data analytics then book an appointment with us.

Please note:

The MASH service will be available for in-person 1-to-1 appointments. Remote appointments are also available on request. If you wish to book an appointment, please follow the link below.

If you have booked a remote appointment, the tutor assigned to you will be in touch with you directly via email to arrange a Microsoft Teams appointment.

When booking your appointment, please use your qub.ac.uk email address.

Please note:

  • Group bookings are welcome.

  • All appointments MUST be booked through the online booking system.

  • If you require disabled access to the building, please let us know by emailing mash@qub.ac.uk before your appointment.

  • When booking your appointment, please add details of the topic you require help within the general comments box.

Where is MASH located?

MASH is located on the main University site in the Old Physics building (part of the Lanyon building). Enter via the lower entrance and we are located in room LG 013. Click here to view a map of this location (PDF 163kb).

Getting the most from your appointment

To get the most from your appointment you should:

  • Be as specific as you can about what you would like help with. In the first instance you should make one appointment.  It is more efficient to choose the one or two topics that are the most important.
  • Bring your lecture notes/ textbooks/ tutorial notes along with you.
  • Expect to be treated as an independent learner.

What we can help you with:

  • Help you to identify where you require further help in your mathematics or statistics
  • Offer you examples of similar questions to practice, or identify related areas of further study
  • Watch you carry out some sample mathematics or data analysis, and advise you on the effectiveness of your methods
  • Act as a sounding board for your quantitative research ideas

What we can’t help you with:

  • Teach subject specific content that goes beyond the mathematics content.

  • General taught sessions, revision sessions or routine tutoring sessions.

  • Do your homeworks for you, or correct any work that you are going to be formally assessed on.

  • Accept emailed or posted work to be “corrected and returned”, unless we have already discussed your needs and agreed this as a way forward.
