Project Management in the Real World (2 Day Course)

Date(s)

26/03/2019 - 27/03/2019

Time

9:30AM - 4:30PM

Location

The Graduate School, TR7

The aim of this 2-day course (9.30am - 4.30pm) is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the process of managing projects and the tools to assist in planning and tracking progress. Participants will become more comfortable using the PM techniques learned through planning and re-planning a project; so that they can more confidently present their projects and proposals to managers, colleagues, funders and other stakeholders.

This course provides an introduction to key PM concepts and techniques as well as a full day of practice. During Day 2, participants work in groups applying the techniques and planning a full project life-cycle, responding to changes throughout the day. As happens in the 'real world' they need to react to alterations to scope, stakeholder requirements/demands, time conflicts, resourcing and funding changes etc.

This course is intended to be immediately applicable to planning and managing commercial and/or research projects. It covers the theory and principles of project management within the context of the Project Management Institute.

During this 2-day course, participants will:

• Learn the basics of the project planning process and appreciate fundamental principles of a well-led and well directed project, including the importance of managing stakeholders, clearly defining scope and effective estimating
• Be aware of the critical factors that will influence whether or not a project will be successful
• Discover work breakdown structures, network diagrams, critical path analysis, Gantt charts and other elements that ensure robust project control
• Plan a full project using all of the techniques learned in Day 1
• Based on their plan, 'bid' for work - in much the same way as researchers and staff have to present their projects and proposals to managers, colleagues, funders and other stakeholders
• Respond to change, resource, funding and other demands, and make decisions about how to respond and/or replan the project
• Achieve a better level of depth of understanding for the core PM topics (compared to the 1-day course)
• Be introduced to additional topics such as:
o Planning and managing risk and uncertainty (e.g. proactively anticipating and addressing problems, or when project outcomes/resources are not 'fixed'/clear at point of planning);
o Using the plan and tools to control/monitor/report; and
o Resource planning.
