Queen's Welcomes Engineering Students from China

Some 200 engineering students from seven institutions in China came to Queen’s for a summer school hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences from 23 July to 19 August.

The students were able to take part in a substantial series of events across three broad subject areas: Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and a General Engineering and Science programme.

The Chinese visitors were also able to avail of day trips to places of interest in Northern Ireland, including a visit to the Titanic Museum, giving them a sense of the rich industrial and engineering legacy of Belfast.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Queen’s, Professor Mark Price, commented: “It is great to once again be given the chance to welcome these fantastic students from China. It is also a fantastic opportunity to help show them Northern Ireland's great engineering and manufacturing companies. The summer school allows us to strengthen the close links we have always had with China and creates firm foundations and friendships for the future."

The Summer School was one of a number of initiatives linked to the UK-China University Consortium on Engineering Education and Research (UK-China UCEER), a Social Charter Signature Project focusing on innovative technologies in intelligent manufacturing and sustainable energy that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions as both countries transition to a low carbon economy.

The project also presents an opportunity for students from Queen's to build relationships with peers in some of the top universities in China, equiping the next generation of engineers with the skills and contacts they will need to flourish in a globally competitive field.
