Queen's researchers in call for Chief Government Linguist

A team of researchers from Queen's in partnership with a range of UK Universities, has called for the creation of a Chief Government Linguist post to reflect the importance of developing language skills for the future of the UK.

Jim Shannon, Stephen Kinnock

The intervention comes in the context of concerns about the continuing fall in numbers studying modern languages in higher and further education, and the consequent effects on the national capacity in fields where languages are vital to the future of the UK, such as international relations, trade, defence, culture and community cohesion.

Creation of this post is being proposed by academics from the Open World Research Initiative (OWRI), a major modern languages research initiative funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and involving over 100 researchers in fifteen universities around the UK as well as multiple partners outside the university sector.
