Shared Education Model adopted in Kosovo

Researchers from the Queen's University Centre for Shared Education and from the University’s Centre for Identity and Intergroup Relations were in Kosovo in January to take part in a symposium on peacebuilding through shared education.

The aim of the symposium was to support the initiation of a shared education pilot project in Kosovo, building on the shared education work that has been ongoing between Queen’s University Belfast and the Balkans since 2009.

Colleagues from Queen's, including Professor Joanne Hughes, Director of Queen's University's Centre for Shared Education, were welcomed by Her Excellency Atifete Jahjaga, President of the Republic of Kosovo from 2011 to 2016, and took part in workshops with teachers from the local municipality and other key stakeholders.

The networking event was hosted by Edona Maloku of RIT Kosovo, a branch of New York-based Rochester Institute of Technology.  Local partners in Kosovo will continue to collaborate with the Queen’s team, as well as other key educational stakeholders in Macedonia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, to share expertise on adapting the shared education peacebuilding model in each of the local contexts.

The Centre for Shared Education in Queen's aims to promote sharing in education as a mechanism to deliver economic, social and educational benefits to children, schools and society. Shared Education is a Social Charter Signature Project.
