‘In the house of lords, the bill for purchasing glebes fell. The lower house of convocation drew up sixteen reasons against it. They thought it gave the bishops too arbitrary a power to sequester livings for as long as they liked till they had purchased glebes and built houses.’ SP 63/364, f. 80r.

For purchasing glebes
‘This fell in the house of lords. The convocation gave sixteen reasons against it, and thought that bishops had too much power either to keep livings in their hands to build houses and purchase glebes or to sequester any part of a living; and more especially if they died it would be hard to bring their executors to an account.’ SP 63/364, f. 106r

Lords
‘The Viscount Massareene brings in a pamphlet entitled “A timely caveat of the inferior clergy of Ireland, against a bill entitled an act for purchasing glebes, etc.” supposing that the same was reflecting on some members of this house.
Ordered, on motion, that the lords undernamed, or any five of them, be a committee to consider of the pamphlet entitled … and report their opinion to this house what is fit to be done, and that all the lords who come shall have voices; and that this committee do meet tomorrow morning, at eleven of the clock.’

Lords
‘The Lord Viscount Massareene standing at the clerk’s table reports from the committee appointed to consider of the pamphlet entitled … that they met, and are of opinion:
That the said pamphlet is a false, scandalous and malicious libel, and not only highly reflecting on particular lords, but arraigning the justice and honour of this house.
That the said pamphlet should be burned by the hands of the common hangman.
That it is likewise the opinion of this committee that Joseph Ray, Eliphal Dobson, Will. Norman, John Ware and Jeremiah Pepyat be sent for, and sworn at the bar of this house, true answer to make to such questions as shall be put to them by the said committee.
That they should move for leave to sit again; and have leave to adjourn from time to time; and to send for persons, papers and records.
To which the house agrees.
[Pamphlet ordered to be burned; committee to have powers, and above named individuals to be summoned.]
…
[‘William Norman, Joseph Ray and Eliphal Dobson, stationers’ examined on pamphlet.]
