      Library Edition
      Our Mutual
Friend. Library Edition. 2 vols. London: Chapman and Hall, 1869.
            853 pp.
Our Mutual Friend appeared as volumes 25 and 26 of this edition,
which was reprinted in the United States by James R. Osgood (later Ticknor & Fields,
and Fields, Osgood & Co.) of Boston. It was
        designed,
        according
to the advertisement, to present Dickens’s writings ‘in a
far more convenient form, at once for present perusal and preservation,
than any of them have yet appeared in’. ‘Great care’ was
said to have been taken ‘to render the series legible, compact
and handsome’, and a new typeface was designed to assist in achieving
this end. The volumes were slim, easy to handle, and the print was large
and clear. This edition included the original illustrations and Dickens’s
      Postscript.
