About Us

Section of the TARANIS laser

Cancer is the second biggest cause of death in developed countries, behind cardiovascular diseases.  It is estimated that one in three people will develop a tumour within their lifetime, affecting 300,000 people a year in the UK alone. Cancer prevention and treatment, then, ranks as one of the most pressing challenges facing society, in the UK and beyond.

This provides a strong motivation for developing novel technologies which may lead to more effective or more widely availables forms of treatment.

A-SAIL aims to develop innovative techniques for accelerating ions in the perspective of their possible future use as a tool to fight cancer.

The project draws on the  complementary, multidisciplinary expertise of leading scientists from five institutions across the UK.
