Gas Networks Ireland

Formerly Bord Gáis Networks, GNI is a commercial body serving 650,000 gas users in 152 population centres in Ireland and 350,000 electricity customers. It develops, operates and maintains the natural gas network. The €10 million Bord Gáis Alternative Energy Research and Development Fund was established in 2008 to support research into emerging energy-related technologies and to support an increase in the quantity and quality of research in alternative energies in Ireland’s colleges with a view to bringing new innovative technologies to market. 

Technical expertise available to ATBEST fellows through GNI includes:

  • Access to operational knowledge of the gas infrastructure in Ireland
  • 13,229km of gas pipelines and two sub-sea interconnectors
