Manual on Local Area Plans (2010-2012)
Creating Sustainable Communities
Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government;
Republic of Ireland Action 21 of Government Policy on Architecture 2009-2015
This project aimed at undertaking comprehensive review of best Practice and Policy Guidelines on local Area Plans and sustainable development projects on a global scale to develop a Manual on Local Area Plans for Ireland. The Manual sets out a good practice approach to preparing LAPs. It is a companion document to Local Area Plans: Creating Sustainable Communities - Guidelines for Planning Authorities. The Planning Guidelines set out in detail the policy context, key requirements and qualities for LAPs. The approach is not intended to be definitive, but to capture the ‘essentials’ of a quality Local Area Plan and a process for preparing one.
The project was intensive and took place in a period of around 6 months, followed by an official review, consultation and approval of the Irish Government. The project was done in collaboration with Loci Urban Design, Architecture and Planning and senior advisors of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government; Martin Colreavy; Chief Architect, and Niall Cussen; Senior Planning Adviser.
