A Longitudinal Examination of Inter-Group Contact in Northern Ireland

Description: This 5-year study will employ a variety of methods including surveys, focus groups and diary studies to explore young people’s attitudes and experiences of intergroup contact.   The first phase of the research will begin in June 2011 when the research team will conduct an online survey with all Year 8 pupils in around 70 post primary schools in Northern Ireland and this will be followed by a series of focus groups and diary studies with students.  The survey, focus groups and diary studies will be repeated with the same sample of pupils in Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12. As one of the few longitudinal studies of attitudes to intergroup contact in the UK, the research will shed new light on the complex issues pertaining to schools and inter-group relationships in divided societies.
