Fred joined the CDT in September 2017, having previously completed a BSc in Chemistry at the University of Sussex and an MSc in Nanomaterials and Materials Science at the University of Sheffield.
In Semester 1 of 2017-18 Fred completed a short exploratory research project at the University of Glasgow in Characterisation of mid infrared LEDs for gas sensing, supervised by Professor Marc Sorel. In Semester 2 of 2017-18, he conducted a practical research project at Queen's University Belfast supervised by Dr Fumin Huang, Laser carving on 2D materials.

MANIPULATION AND EXPLOITATION OF THE DYNAMIC PROCESSES OF SKYRMIONS

The project will investigate skyrmion dynamic processes through developing high spatio-temporal resolution imaging methods and through direct control of the energetic landscape in which skyrmions reside. Direct nano-patterning of the FeGe nanoslabs will be performed using the Helios Xe PFIB, to form structures such as wires and junctions relevant for information propagation and processing. Periodic ferromagnetic patterns will also be produced using direct electron beam deposition of iron and cobalt materials in order to induce frustration and to investigate magnetic field free stabilisation of skyrmions.
