Putting the squeeze on skyrmions
Materials whose crystal structures lack a centre of inversion symmetry can support chiral (left or right handed symmetry) magnetic structures such as helicoids and skyrmions. Magnetic skyrmions are topological quasi-particles which can appear as periodic lattice arrangements with well defined equilibrium spacings. This project will explore what happens when the skyrmions are stressed by compressing them away from their natural spacing. Results will be compared to data obtained from concurrent experiments using high resolution magnetic imaging.
