Nathan joined the CDT in September 2018, having previously completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics at Queen's University Belfast.
For his University of Glasgow Semester 1 Mini Project, Nathan is working with Dr Martin Lavery on:
Modelling of a Dynamic Integrated Photonics Circuit to Mitigate Optical Aberrations in Free-Space Interconnections Deployed in a Data Centre Environment
Data centres require many tens of thousands of cabled interconnections between computer hardware. These physical connections present a massive challenge for data centre design, construction and upgrades. Short free-space optical links can offer equivalent connection speed to optical fibre but without the burden of bulky cables. This project will investigate the use of integrated photonics chips to mitigate the effects optical beams experience while travelling through the turbulent air that exists in a data centre environment.
