Causeway Sensors EngD Studentship


Company: Causeway sensors was founded in 2013 and has so far raised £1.8M in capital from private and institutional investors. The company has an active research programme including R&D funding from the European Regional Development Fund and an Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership in collaboration with the Cancer Centre at QUB. They currently have ten(?) employees, four(?) of whom have doctoral level training in nanomaterials and photonics. Causeway Sensors Ltd. uses ground-breaking nanotechnology have developed a plasmonic metamaterial with designed optical resonances as a platform for sensing applications.

Location: After the CDT Training Phase, the research student will be located at Causeway Sensors Limited, 63 University Road, Belfast, BT7 1NF. The research engineer will continue to be involved in cohort activities and occasional travel back to Glasgow/Belfast and via Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) partner the Irish Photonic Integration Centre (Cork-Dublin), for ongoing training and annual conference/winter schools.  

Research: In commercialising the basic research, Causeway Sensors focus on diagnostic applications in the healthcare sector. The focus is on pathogen detection at point of care for critical diseases such as SEPSIS. The needs of HAMR technology are not dissimilar in that they also need to integrate a plasmonic sensor to a light delivery platform. Currently, validation instruments rely on discrete components but mass-market point of care will require manufacture at scale with true photonic integration. The successful EngD Research Engineer will benefit from direct supervision at Causeway Sensors, working on their research alongside employees. They will gain a full view of the research process for the company’s technology product focus.

The EngD will consist of a series of projects in the areas such as:-

  • Design and fabrication of novel plasmonic near field transducer (NFT) structures
  • Alternative plasmonic materials and process scale up
  • Nanoscale manufacturing
  • Biological sensing

Doctoral degree: EngD with additional £5k p.a. tax-free stipend top up (£20k p.a. total)
