Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics EngD Studentship
Company: Fraunhofer CAP is part of the global Fraunhofer network, Europe’s largest applied R and D provider. Our principle aim is to perform industry-driven research to enable new or improved products and processes for industrial partners, particularly in photonics and optical technologies. We offer professional R&D services to industry as a flexible and practical resource that responds to companies’ needs in the development of photonic technologies for application in Quantum Technologies, Space, Health and Lifesciences, Energy, Environment, Sensing, Security and Defence areas. The training EngD option within CDT PIADS is particularly relevant to Fraunhofer CAP due the nature of our interactions with multiple industrial partners, where projects can occur on varying timescales.
Location: After the training Phase, the Research Engineer will be based on site at Fh-CAP, at the Technology and Innovation Centre, Glasgow. The research engineer will continue to be involved in cohort activities and occasional travel back to Glasgow/Belfast and via Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) partner the Irish Photonic Integration Centre (Cork-Dublin), for ongoing training and annual conference/winter schools.
Research: Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics offers a wide range of expertise and knowledge as well as fully equipped research laboratories.
Project areas could include the following:-
- Novel laser sources including OPO systems, mid-IR, solid-state, Raman,
- Fibre optic and semiconductor disk lasers
- CW and Pulsed Laser Sources – including ultrafast systems
- Sensing and imaging systems
- Measurement and instrumentation
- Integrated fibre photonics
- Waveguides and plasmonics.
