Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology EngD Studentship
Company: Plasma Technology, a subsidiary of Oxford Instruments Plc (OIPT), provides etch and deposition process solutions for nanometre-sized features, nanolayers and the controlled growth of nanostructures. These solutions are based on core technologies in plasma, ion beam and atomic layer deposition and etch. End market applications include power devices for electric vehicles and semiconductor lasers for both optical networks and remote sensing. Products range from clustered cassette-to-cassette platforms for high-throughput production processing to compact stand-alone systems for R&D. Many of OIPT's instruments are used within the James Watt Nanofabrication Facility at the University of Glasgow, of which (all CDT PIADS students will have access to (i.e. Oxford Instruments FlexAL Atomic Layer Deposition, Oxford Instruments System 100 ICP 380 PECVD, Oxford Instruments PECVD 80+)). Plasma Technology is actively involved in doctoral sponsorship to support their R&D activities with long-standing relationships with many UK, EU, US and Chinese universities. Many of their graduates are now part of our 300+ family, with positions in engineering, R&D, Sales, Product Management, and management & leadership staff, both in the UK and abroad.
Location: After the CDT Training Phase, the research student will be located at OIPT site Yatton, Bristol. The research engineer will continue to be involved in cohort activities and occasional travel back to Glasgow/Belfast and via Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) partner the Irish Photonic Integration Centre (Cork-Dublin), for ongoing training and annual conference/winter schools.
Research: Industrial EngD projects with Plasma Technology will focus on the challenges associated with identifying next-generation materials systems for compound semiconductor lasers and their fabrication, particularly in the area of atomic-scale fabrication and measurement. The successful candidate will be able to choose the research direction from a portfolio of projects in the areas of:
- Advanced fabrication solutions for next-generation compound semiconductor lasers
- Alternative materials systems for next-generation compound semiconductor lasers
- Application of atomic-scale fabrication and analysis techniques
Doctoral degree: EngD with additional £5k p.a. tax-free stipend top up (£20k p.a. total)
