Academic Awards

The CDT Joint Programme Board is responsible for making the following awards in line with the regulations for Postgraduate Taught Awards at Queen’s University Belfast:

PG Certificate in Photonic Integration and Advanced Data Storage: students who exit the programme having successfully completed 60 credits of the taught courses/modules will be eligible for the award.

PG Diploma in Photonic Integration and Advanced Data Storage: students who exit the programme having successfully completed between 120 credits of the taught courses/modules in year one will be eligible for the award.

MREs in Photonic Integration & Advanced Data Storage: students who have successfully completed 180 credits as per the CDT programme schedule have a number of options about the academic award/s they wish to receive.

The Innovation Academy (a collaboration between Queen's University Belfast, University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin) is responsible for making the award of PG Certificate in Innovation & Entrepreneurship.

Academic Awards: Options

At the end of your first year on the CDT programme you will have choices about the academic awards you may wish to recieve. We will keep you well informed about these choices and will explain them fully to you at critical points in the programme.

Your options regarding academic awards are:

Option 1

Using the 180 credits completed up until the end of Year 1 students can opt to be awarded the MREs in Photonic Integration and Advanced Data Storage.

Students will complete a further 30 credits of courses from the Innovation Academy during years 2 and 3 of the CDT Programme but they will not be eligible for the PG Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship awarded by the Innovation Academy.

Option 2

Do not use the credits completed up until the end f Year 1 for the MRes award.  Then, on completion of the 60 credits via the Innovation Academy, students can opt to be awarded the Innovation Academy’s Postgraduate Certificate in Innovation and Enterprise.

Option 3

Students who opt to accept the Innovation Academy’s Postgraduate Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, as outlined in option 2 above, can undertake 30 additional credits* (between years 2 and 4 with the agreement of the main supervisor) and can also receive the award of MRes in Photonic Integration and Advanced Data Storage.

* suitable technical modules/courses to satisfy the overall credit and curriculum requirements of the MRes.  The availability of courses will vary from year to year.  Please contact Brenda Morris for details.

Students choosing this option can therefore be awarded both the MRes in Photonic Integration and Advanced Data Storage (awarded by QUB) and the Postgraduate Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (awarded by the Innovation Academy).
