MRes Award in Photonic Integration & Advanced Data Storage

CDT students who have successfully completed the 180 credits in year one, as outlined in the programme schedule, will be eligible to receive the jointly awarded MRes degree.  The MRes Award is made in accordance with the following mark scale, as set out in the Study Regulations for Postgraduate Taught Programmes at Queen’s University Belfast:

70+ Pass with distinction*

60+ Pass with commendation

50+ Pass

Below 50 Fail

*Pass with distinction will be awarded only when the following three conditions have been satisfied: an overall average of 70+ is achieved and a mark of 70+ is achieved in the Individual Research Project module and average of 65+ is achieved in the other modules.

CDT Students should note the following:

  1. Students must pass all modules to be eligible for the MRes award.
  2. The pass mark for all taught modules is 50% at QUB and C3 at the University of Glasgow.  For the purposes of calculating awards all marks awarded by the University of Glasgow for the taught courses/modules undertaken in semester one will be converted to the QUB marking scale using the agreed Conversion Matrix
  3. Students who have failed the Photonic Integration and Advanced Data Storage summer research project (60 credits) will not be eligible for the MRes Award.
  4. Students who, at the first attempt, have failed a taught course/s with a combined value of not greater than 40 credits will normally* be permitted one further attempt to obtain a pass, in order to be eligible for the award of MRes.
  5. For the purposes of calculating the final award the mark gained at the second attempt will be capped at 50%.

*It will not always possible to offer a reassessment opportunity, particularly for practical work and group work.  Students must consult individual module leaders and course/module guides for details of specific reassessment exemptions.
