You must manage your own research and are expected to meet regularly with your supervisor.
As a broad principle, a minimum of six meetings per year with your supervisors is recommended; at least one of these should be a face-to-face- meeting of the complete supervisory team. It is your responsibility to organise/initiate these.
Up to £250 per annum is available to facilitate one face-to-face meeting of your supervisory team. This can be used as a contribution towards travel costs etc. Due to the many diary pressures of your supervisors, we strongly recommend that you should contact your supervisors early in the academic year to identify and agree a suitable date. Please contact the CDT Manager for details on how to access this funding.
You must keep thorough records of meetings with your supervisors, which should include the main items of discussion, agreed actions and reviews. The Record of Progress Form should be used for QUB-based students.
In the third year of the CDT programme you will complete the final Innovation Academy course, which will be be coordinated for you by the Graduate School at Queen's. The Graduate School will organise and cover the costs of residential accommodation in Dublin, but you must cover your own travel costs from your research budget and should factor these costs into your annual budget accordingly. Researcher Development Training
CDT students continue to have access to the full range of Researcher Development Programmes at both Queen's University Belfast and the University of Glasgow, in their third year.
We recommend that you review the courses on offer and discuss your training requirements with your supervisor. We strongly recommend that you avail of the training and continue to develop your skills as you progress through the remainder of the CDT programme. We suggest that the following courses should be considered/undertaken:
Research Integrity 0.25 days; Data Management 0.25 days; Academic Writing -Effective Writing 1 & 2, 0.5 days; Public Engagement Activity/Committee Representation 4 days
PG Leadership Programme 2 days; Academic Writing - Writing for Publication 1 day; Job Hunting and Applications/Interview Techniques 1 day
Viva Training 1 day; Grant Writing 1 day
