Visiting PhD Students

Vanda Correia (visiting PhD student)

I majored in Sport Sciences at the Faculty of Human Kinetics, Technical University of Lisbon (Portugal). In the same faculty I am currently doing my PhD in Sport Science, on Decision Making in Team Sports under the direction of Dr. Duarte Araújo. I am particularly interested in understanding the dynamic interaction of contextual and individual variables in the transitions of players’ course of action, both individually and as a collective (team).

I have been working in collaboration with Prof. Cathy Craig to investigate information for guiding decisions about action in Rugby, using immersive and dynamic VR simulations. In our experiments, we aimed to investigate how expert and novice rugby players’ decisions and actions are influenced by the informational variables presented in a virtual rugby game situation. More specifically we were interested in players' ability to perceive affordances for themselves and affordances for others.

Sebastien Brault (visiting PhD student)

I am a PhD student at the University of Rennes 2 in the M2S laboratory specializing in Physiology and Biomechanics of Sport Exercise. My research involves collaboration with the School of Psychology, QUB, on perception and action mechanisms and decision making processes in sports. My PhD project involves the use   of: i) motion capture and motion analysis to understand the biomechanical determinants of deceptive movement in rugby ii) 3D development solutions and Head Mounted Displays (HMD) to immerse subjects in virtual 3D rugby situations iii) perception and action analysis to understand the perceptual skills needed to detect deceptive intention during a 1 vs. 1 scenario in rugby (see publications Immersive Interactive Virtual Reality). I successfully defended my PhD on the 25th of November, 2011.
