Rural Migration

Welcome to our project website for
The rural retirement transition: mobility treands and consequences

Migration is a key social process in contemporary rural change. This project studies how the mobility of the pre-retired affects rural areas in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It seeks to examine under what circumstances people move into rural areas prior to retirement and it considers the consequences of these population movements in the context of population change as a whole.

This two-year project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) - a national body which funds independent research undertaken by Universities – and is a collaboration between Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Aberdeen.
