Green Impact Scheme

Green Impact Scheme

Queen’s University Belfast’s environmental vision is “to become a low-carbon organisation, by reducing its carbon emissions and providing a high-quality and sustainable working and learning environment for students and staff.”

The aim of the University’s Carbon Management Plan is to reduce Co2 by 21 per cent by the year 2020.

The Wellcome Trust-Wolfson Northern Ireland Clinical Research Facility participated in the NUS Green Impact Scheme for 2017/2018 and won a Silver Award on 21 May 2018.

Through our simple and practical everyday work activities and practices, we are doing our part to reduce our environmental impact.  We encourage our colleagues and users of the Facility to become involved and to embrace this initiative in the following ways:

Reducing: waste, non-essential electricity, water, disposable cups, paper consumption.
Reusing: paper, envelopes, cardboard boxes, bubble wrap.
Recycling: stamps, toner cartridges, batteries, cardboard, plastic bottles, cans, Christmas cards sent to Play Resource, publications.
Energy: Monitoring temperature of fridges and freezers in our diet kitchen and laboratories.  Encouraging “switch-off” of light switches upon exiting a room, computers, monitors and non-essential electrical equipment when not in use, especially at the end of day.
Travel: Awareness of the QUB Travel to Work scheme. Public transport, walking and cycling, bicycle storage and in-house shower facilities.
Resources:  Double-sided printing, photocopying, recycling bins, collecting incoming envelopes, using Warp-it, providing teleconferencing facilities.
Biodiversity: Attendance at events organised via Estates Environmental Team, such as Woodland Trust Talks. Bringing awareness to benefits of buying eco-friendly and biodiversity-friendly products for work and home.
Procurement: Promoting Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance, where possible, for visitor hospitality. Promoting sustainability and local producers.
Communication: Circulating our Green Impact newsletters by email, establishing a dedicated Green Impact noticeboard and “suggestion box”, discussion at meetings.
