Structural health monitoring of Birches west bridge –M1
Queens was commissioned to undertake a structural health monitoring (SHM) assessment of the damaged abutment beam supporting the Birches Roundabout West Bridge No. 40112.
A 2D finite element model was developed to determine the areas of maximum compression and tension on the beam under various load conditions.
A series of fibre optic sensors were installed on the bridge structure and the change in strain due to the crossing of a vehicle of known load was then measured using this sensing system.
The data was then used to assesses the real capacity of the damaged beam.
Contrary to the findings of the traditional bridge assessment the SHM confirmed the bridge was fit for purpose. The impact of this is significant economic savings in terms of repair costs and traffic disruption.
