Extreme Wave Loading on an Oscillating Wave Surge Converter

 

PhD Description:

My PhD, started in September 2013. The focus of this research is to further the understanding of loading on Wave Energy Converters (WEC’s), in particularly bottom hinged flap type devices such as Aquamarine Powers Oyster device, otherwise known as an Oscillating Wave Surge Converter (OWSC). The objective of this research is to optimise the design of OWSC’s to reduce loading upon them and increase the survivability of the devices. Hence, reducing capital expenditure and making OWSC’s a more viable renewable energy form.      

The key areas of research which affect the loading on OWSC’s are geometric shape, pitch stiffness, structural dynamics and wave characteristics. These areas will be investigated further using both numerical modelling techniques and physical experiments, with the aim to verify numerical models with physical results. By furthering the understanding of these key areas it is hoped that OWSC’s design can be improved and optimised, without affecting the performance of the device within reason.
