Through the Marine Renewables Infrastructure Network (MaRINET) and the TTT2 project large scale towing tank tests were undertaken at INSEAN in Rome.  Previous studies of tidal turbines have been conducted extensively in flumes at small scales. However, a turbine has, thus far, not been tested in both flume condition and field conditions at the same scale.

The effects of flume conditions, such as solid flat boundaries, on turbine performance and flow conditions have not, therefore, been investigated.  The turbines used in the INI TTT project were tested at the large scale towing tank which has the same 1/10th scale dimensions as the field tests conducted. The effects of boundaries and inflow velocity accuracy were studied during tests conducted in Sept 2014 as part of the TTT2 project running from June 2014 to May 2015.
