Atlantic Ocean Wave Analyses

With the current economic climate and the changes in extreme weather conditions the need to identify the future wave climate has become very topical in Ireland and other European regions. The effect of extreme conditions can be seen especially in offshore and coastal regions which have been mostly affected by the recent high winds.

To identify the future wave climate MRG use a wave analyses model, designed using the  MIKE 21 Spectral Waves model by DHI. This model is used to identify trends for significant wave height, mean wave periods and mean wave directions.   We use ERA-Interim 6hourly Reanalyses wind data to drive the model and through the use of a fully spectral formulation, wave data can be simulated. This simulated wave data is correlated against ERA-Interim 6hourly Reanalyses wave data and verified against real-time wave buoy data.
