A pilot of a novel new approach to improve girls' enjoyment of maths, developed by researchers in the Centre in partnership with colleagues at Trinity College Dublin, has shown promising signs.
The pilot study was conducted by Centre Fellow, Dr Ian Cantley, in collaboration with Dr Mark Prendergast at Trinity. The study focused on girls during their first year in post-primary school and was a response to evidence suggesting that girls' attitudes towards maths tend to deteriorate after transfer from primary school. The researchers were motivated by the need to redress the gender imbalance in take up of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.
Using a specially designed resource - Izak9 - with girls in Northern Ireland and the Republic showed encouraging signs of improvement in their positive engagement with maths. The researchers are now seeking funding to explore this further with a larger trial.
