UNDERGRADUATE POSTGRADUATE TAUGHT POSTGRADUATE RESERCH JUNIOR ACADEMY OF MUSIC
SARC is part of the School of Arts, English & Languages, Queen's Universty Belfast. The School has a wide selection of taught programmes to choose from in each of our subject areas.
SARC is also part of a vibrant research scene with over fifty masters and PhD students who come from all over the world to work in our unique research community. Many of our post-graduate researchers have successfully pursued careers in the higher education and creative industry sectors, and have obtained positions including at institutions such as MIT, McGill University or the University of Bournemouth.
World-leading experts provide research-led teaching in all our programmes delivered across the School. As well as their primary degree programme, students have the opportunity to collaborate across their main study area and work on productions and projects across the school.

Students will be encouraged to attend our public events including concerts, seminars, productions, festivals and workshops. These events showcase world-class artists and speakers in their fields. They will also be encouraged to participate in our wide range of performance groups and societies at the School.
Junior Academy of Music
The Junior Academy of Music (JAM) at Queen’s provides music activities for aspiring young musicians. There are four programmes within JAM each tailored to a specific age group and suitable activites. JAM is devised and delivered by internationally recognised musicians and specialised teachers. JAM 1, JAM 2 and JAM 3 run on Saturdays in the Music Building while JAM 4 and JAM 4+ is on Fridays in the world-renowned Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC). Click here for more information about JAM.

BA MUSIC AND SOUND DESIGN
MUSIC COMPOSITION AND SOUND DESIGN FOR SCREEN, STAGE AND NEW MEDIA.
This innovative new programme is designed for musicians from a wide range of musical backgrounds interested in composing music and designing sound for a wide range of contexts but with particular emphasis on film and theatre.

BA MUSIC PERFORMANCE
SOLO AND ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE ENCOMPASSING ALL MUSICAL GENRES.
This new programme is designed to appeal to performers from a wide range of musical backgrounds including classical, folk, traditional, pop, rock, jazz, singer/songwriter, electronic and experimental music traditions. Students also develop skills for performing in the recording studio utilising technology in their performance practice.

BSC AUDIO ENGINEERING
DESIGN OF HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGIES FOR CREATIVE APPLICATIONS.
This interdisciplinary new programme is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in engineering within the audio and digital media industries. Students gain technical skills and knowledge relevant to the broader field of electrical and electronic engineering and sound engineering for musical and audio applications.

COMBINING THEORY AND PRACTICE.
Preparing students for contemporary content and programme making in television, radio, journalism, and other new and emerging digital media platforms.

MA MEDIA AND BROADCAST PRODUCTION
THE MA OFFERS AN INTEGRATED PROGRAMME OF STUDY IN THE THEORETICAL, APPLIED AND CREATIVE ASPECTS OF CONTEMPORARY BROADCASTING.
Students will be introduced to theoretical approaches to broadcasting, as well as to basic techniques useful for broadcast practice. The programme should appeal to graduate students in the Humanities and Social Sciences, particularly those with backgrounds in English, politics, history, journalism, cultural studies and creative writing.

MRES IN ARTS AND HUMANITIES
A RESEARCH PREPARATION DEGREE THAT OFFERS STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERTAKE ADVANCED STUDIES WITHIN THE FACULTY OF ARTS HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES AT QUEEN’S.
The course is structured around the personal research interests of each student and supported by a bespoke research preparation portfolio and a range of optional modules in areas related to the research.
PHD IN MUSIC
SONIC ARTS
A PhD in Sonic Arts offers the opportunity for cross-disciplinary research reflecting the interests of members of the Sonic Arts Research Centre and its staff.
MUSICOLOGY
The School offers PhD supervision in a wide range of fields. A recent strength has been in nineteenth- / early twentieth-century music, with topics such as Exoticism in Massenet, Baroque influences in Brahms, Richard Strauss and Modernism, Salome, Strauss and Dance, and the music of Frank Bridge.
COMPOSITION
The PhD in Composition programme is part of the practice-led research activities which take place within the School. Student composers can work across a broad range of creative practice from acoustic composition through to creative work in sonic arts. Students primarily begin by focusing in one of the areas below but during the course of their studies can explore topics from both areas. The School has seven members of staff supervising postgraduate research in composition.
