Industry to Student Mentoring Programme
Successfully Launched for 2022/23

The School of Biological Sciences have successfully launched a pilot mentoring programme which has connected current students to relevant industry mentors for the academic year of 2022/23 - and we are very EXCITED!

What better way to develop as a student than having an experienced mentor guiding you?

Over the years we have recognised the importance of students having access to industry professionals.  This access to experienced mentors will support students to learn about career options, developing and building skills and confidence and building a network of connections to support students in their career journey.

It is evident that this connection to industry professionals is sought by students as we had 3 times the number of students to mentors apply.  We have successfully matched students across our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to mentors from broad areas of:

  • Consultancy
  • Research
  • Conservation
  • Food Science
  • Environmental Agencies
  • Health Science
  • Business Management

The mentoring allows each mentor and mentee to discuss and agree aims and goals from the programme and plan out best ways to reach these.  This could include:

  • Career Development
  • Presentations and Public Speaking
  • Business Start-Up
  • Building Networks
  • Recruitment and Training
  • Increasing Career and Business Confidence
  • Resilience
  • Problem Solving
  • Someone to Support and Sounding Board
  • Organisation and Planning
  • Profile and Visibility
  • Interviews and Pitches

We are sure that the programme will be a success and many benefits will have been gained.

THANK YOU - to our mentors for volunteering your time and resources to support mentees.

THE STUDENT MENTORING PROGRAMME
THIS PROGRAMME IS TO HELP CURRENT SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES STUDENTS ENGAGE WITH INDSUTRY MENTORS.

We want to provide students with a support network to think about the career options open to them and encourage them to understand the skills they have as well as the skills they need to develop.

The School of Biological Sciences is a busy, multidisciplinary community. Spanning everything from agricultural technology to zoology. The School has approximately 1000 students broadly covering food security, microbiology, ecosystem biology to sustainability.

Work Related Learning (WRL) is an important part of university life, it enhances students’ understanding of the world of work; themselves and their potential work environments. As a result, students are further empowered to enter and succeed in graduate job markets; the world of work and their wider lives.

Over the years we have developed a very successful work placement programme and want to add to the opportunities to connect students with industry professionals.

As part of our WRL offerings the Biological Sciences will deliver a pilot mentoring programme in 2022/23 with the aim of a mentoring cohort being launched yearly.
