CHEMISTRY AT WORK
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

Thomas Sheppard studied Chemistry at Queen’s (first MSci, then PhD), before moving to Germany, and KIT.

 

He's been in Germany for the last 6 and a half years, where the main topic of his research is X-ray imaging using synchrotron radiation, which means traveling to various large-scale research centres all around Europe to make use of the high quality X-rays produced there!

Thomas is studying heterogeneous catalytic reactions mainly - materials and processes relevant in pollution control (e.g. automotive emissions) and energy storage/conversion (e.g. power-to-X). Thomas and his team use X-ray tomography in particular to look at the structure and function of materials in 3D space. The job is very exciting and involves a lot of travel, including regular work in at least countries (Germany, France, Switzerland, UK) and interacting with people everywhere from physics, to engineering, to biology.
