Mr Stan Brown, CEO of Forensic Science Northern Ireland, gave a lecture at the School of Law about forensic science and its use within the criminal justice system. Located at the intersection of law and science, points of frictions can arise between the two and legal practitioners often misunderstand forensic science. Mr Brown explained that forensic science supports law through the entire criminal process, from the crime scene to the courts, and, as a neutral science, that does not assist only one side of the criminal trial (prosecution or defence). The sole duty of the expert witness in forensic science is to the court, by providing unbiased scientific evidence- whether that turns out be inculpatory or exculpatory.
