10 Years on: A QUB graduate's journey through nuclear science by AJ Mitchell

Back to events
Date(s)
July 25, 2019 -
Location
Larmor Lecture Theatre, Physics Building, Main Site
Time
11:00

Dr AJ Mitchell holds a 1st class (Hons.) MSci Applied Mathematics and Physics (2009) from Queen's University Belfast and a PhD in Nuclear Physics (2012) from the University of Manchester. He is currently a Research Fellow of the Department of Nuclear Physics at the Australian National University, a lecturer with the ANU Physics Education Centre, and an Academic Fellow with the Tuckwell Undergraduate Scholarship Program.

Abstract: Almost 10 years ago to the date, I was part of the Queen's University School of Mathematics and Physics graduating class of 2009. With a MSci in Applied Mathematics and Physics degree in my back pocket, I set off to Manchester to undertake a PhD in Nuclear Physics. In the decade that has followed, my research has been centred around the internal structure of atomic nuclei. This presentation will walk through the principles of nuclear spectroscopy, and fundamental questions such as: How does nuclear structure evolve across the landscape? Do the same theoretical models work for stable and radioactive nuclei? and How is atomic nuclear structure connected to neutrino masses?

Tea and coffee will be provided.

For catering purposes, please let Emma at e.finnegan@qub.ac.uk know if you will be attending.
