The fragility of nuclear and kpc-scale galactic discs against mergers

Nuclear Stellar Discs (NSD) are thin structures present in many types of galaxies along all the Hubble Sequence as recently revealed through Hubble Space Telescope observations. These objects do provide clues of the assembly history of their host galaxy and, in particular, its last suffered
major merger. NSDs do not survive such destructive events and therefore should be considered as fragile structures. However, the behaviour against intermediate and minor mergers is still unclear.
Similarly, embedded (larger-scale) thin discs show similar behaviour. Their lack of ability to resist against (major) galaxy encounters has been already explored. Nevertheless, simulations with higher degree of realism, tailored for lesser merger mass ratios, have not been extensively conducted up
to date. In conjunction with the knowledge obtained for the NSDs, this work focuses on the reconstruction of the recent merger assembly history of galaxies. We theorise that such structures are more fragile than previously indicated.

Biography

I’m naturally from Spain. I studied Physics at University of Salamanca and after that, I got a Master’s degree in Astrophysics at University of La Laguna in Tenerife. After the Master, I started a PhD in Astrophysics at QUB based on Armagh Observatory and Planetarium.
