Research Title: Co-design of a patient and family initiated escalation of care intervention to detect and refer patient deterioration in the acute adult hospital setting.

Research Interests: Early detection and management of acute deterioration, Family and patient involvement in escalation of care.

Supervisors: Professor Donna Fitzsimons, Professor Bronagh Blackwood, Dr Jennifer McGaughey

Project summary

Clinical deterioration that is not recognised early enough in hospital remains problematic. It is increasingly recognised that family members may identify changes in a patient’s clinical signs or symptoms prior to healthcare staff. Addressing these concerns is important to improve patient safety. Involving patients and families in recognising and referring their concerns to healthcare staff may improve clinical outcomes. To date there is limited research addressing the experiences of patients and family in recognising deterioration or their involvement in the escalation of care. The aim of this study is to co-design of a patient and family initiated escalation of care intervention to detect and refer patient deterioration in acute adult hospital settings in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. An adapted co-design approach with key stakeholders is utilised to inform the development and acceptability of a patient and family-initiated escalation intervention that may be later tested in practice.
