Masters in Midwifery

Launched in 2021, the School of Nursing and Midwifery is delighted to be able to offer an innovative programme in Midwifery aimed at existing Adult Nurses who want to move into a career in Midwifery.

Midwifery is a rewarding, dynamic and highly skilled profession. This course will equip students with the knowledge, skills and attributes to deliver woman-centred, compassionate, safe and effective care. You will have the opportunity to learn in our new state-of-the-art Simulation Centre and complete practice placements in a range of settings.

The programme has been co-designed with all relevant stakeholders including maternity service users and carers, midwifery students and practice partners to ensure adequate preparation for midwifery practice on completion. The programme will ensure you meet all requirements for registration as a midwife on successful completion including systematic examination of the newborn.

The course is taught by experts in Midwifery who will support you in becoming a caring, autonomous and evidence based practitioner incorporating leadership skills and working in partnership with women, families, and communities.  Our focus on interdisciplinary learning throughout the two year course will enrich your experience and help prepare you for professional practice.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be able to show that they are registered as an adult nurse with the NMC, and must include their NMC PIN number in their online application.
Applicants should have had at least 6 months' post-registration experience as a nurse by the closing date.
Bachelors Honours Degree qualification at least 2:1; in exceptional circumstances a 2:2 may be considered.
Two satisfactory references.

Fees and Funding

There will be a number of places funded by the Department of Health in Northern Ireland and students will be allocated to a Host Trust.  The Host Trust will place each student on a Band 5 salary (the place on the banding is up to the Host Trust).  This programme is not currently open to non-NI students.

Key Points to note

  • Applicants must include their NMC PIN in their personal statement in the online form.  Without this, your application cannot progress to interview.
  • Interviews will take place online; details will be included in the invitation to interview letter.
  • At interview, candidates will be asked to choose their preferred Host Trust.
  • Successful students will be allocated to a Host Trust; the majority of the placements will take place within this Trust area.
  • Successful students will need to leave their current employment or take a career break (where possible) to allow them to progress to the programme.  They will then be employed by their Host Trust on a Band 5 salary.
