Proposed Project Title: Enabling a wireless forensic technology for secure machine type communications
Internet of Things (IoT) market will reach $1.7 trillion by 2020, growing to 75 billion connected devices in 5 years. With 35 billion IoT devices by 2019, £34 billion is estimated for the cybercrime cost for the UK economy. On emerging D2D links, wireless secrecy fundamentally at the physical layer of the wireless connectivity systems is highly desired leveraging unique physical layer properties of wireless systems. However, the state-of-the-art in wireless secrecy, and wireless forensic technology of D2D applications performs very far from its best.
This PhD programme of study will investigate new wireless forensic technology to improve the level of wireless secrecy in IoT (Secure-IoT). In presence of dense eavesdropper devices, we will identify various features of wireless systems and develop their opportunities to create a new waveform structure to ensure a real-time identification of trusted users and improve the capabilities of anti-interception. It will focus on physical layer D2D communications and in particular optimally leveraging the physical layer properties of wireless channels in massive, sporadic D2D environments. This will ensure secrecy of IoT at the physical layer which is highly desired in future autonomous systems.
